Free Sanitary Towels Campaign
Girls from poor communities at school and varsity level face a regular problem that is not often discussed openly. Thousands of young women in South Africa are faced with choosing between missing classes or using materials such as socks, torn clothes and even newspapers whenever they get their period at the end of the month. Society's and the governments' insensitivity to the call for free sanitary towels in all schools, higher education institutions and public toilets is a clear indication of the patriarchal society we live in where women's needs are still second guessed. EFFSC branches in the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda have been giving out sanitary towels and condoms to students on a monthly basis to highlight how the provision for free sanitary towels should be as easy as making a provision for condoms. The ultimate aim of this campaign is to put pressure on all relevant stakeholders to provide sanitary towels in all public toilets, including primary schools, high schools and institutions of higher education.
